SPEC extension

At SPEC extension we made veneer clocks! Veneer is basically a type of nearly paper thin wood. It is just made of wood! We made designs then made them out of veneer and and then glued them to MDF wood to make the base of our clock. Then we varnished them twice and waited for them to dry before we assembled them. Some people finished over and hour early so they made extra little projects with veneer. By the end of the second day we were all pretty exhausted and had sore backs but our clocks came out beautifully. Thanks Mr Bunks for organising this fun activity and trusting us with the challenge.

For the last time, Bye

Workshop last day!

On Monday Huia had our last day at workshop spec and it was a blast! Almost everybody finished off their projects and extra little projects. Although we are all sad to be going it will be good to get to a new spec. This will not be our last post as we ( Jenna & Emily) are in Spec extension! So we will report back about how that goes! Until then, bye

Woodwork Update

It's nearing the end of the term which means sadly people in Workshop now will move to Foods, everyone's projects are almost complete like Emily's below.

They are pecking birds and once she has assembled them they will peck on the wood making a clacking noise.

Treasure chests

In workshop we have been making treasure chests as our main project. Yesterday we finished off sanding and put hinges on them. Some of us also started to varnish our boxes to finish them off. Screwing the hinges on proved to be a very big task as there were only 2 screwdrivers and it also took quite a while to screw them in because it was a bit small and annoying to handle.

Some of us are well on our way to finishing our extra projects and others are still just starting. There are only a few people who need to make there pencil holders on the lathe now so we should be on track for this term.

Watch this space!

Working Hard!!!!

We are working hard in Workshop that's for sure, creating our treasure chests and for those who are a little bit further ahead then others are even able to create a wooden toy from the books Mr Bunks let us look through. I am lucky to be able to create a wooden toy, so I have decided to make a frog, but I am yet to start it. Emily is also a bit ahead so she is creating pecking birds.

Update, week 6

Yesterday we all finished our light circuits in workshop. We also started treasure chest boxes, they're just boxes but they are shaped like treasure chests. We have also all nearly finished our cool hinges. I have finished mine and I am extremely happy with it. Some people are still finishing of their pencil holders on the lathe and others are way ahead and doing extra projects. So to sum up we are all a bit over the place but that is not always a bad thing. We are all having a lot of fun and there is a lot more where that came from. Bye for now

Hinges!

Another project we are doing as well as the light circuits is a hinge. For those of you that may not know what a hinge is, they are used on things like doors and cupboards so that the door of it can swing open. Mr Bunks said we could use the hinges for anything we would like, possibly a pencil holder or maybe just a typical door hinge the possibilities are endless. I'm just using my hinge as a typical door hinge it has zig zags on one of the sides it makes it look very awesome.

Light Circuits

In Workshop SPEC we have started a new project, i'll call it a light circuit. The light circuits use a lot of wires, transistors and resistors, etc. Once the circuit is finished, two small LED lights will light up when the wires touch. The circuit looks very complicated but when you break it down it's actually quite easy, though it involves a lot of soldering.

Wood turning

In workshop we have been working towards making pencil holders. We have been planing them down so they will fit on a machine called a lathe which we will use to plane down the sides more to make cool shapes to make it look like a table leg. Yesterday I made mine it looks so cool and it is also very useful! I'm sure everybody else is looking forward to their time on the lathe and using their cool new pencil holders!

Wood Turning

In Workshop we are doing wood turning as an on the side project. We are working on it in between working on our main project. It involves marking and planing the corners down, then using the wood turner and a type of rasp/chisel to make indents to make a pretty pencil holder. We are all looking forward to having a go at this! Some of us have already finished this and others have only just started.
Hopefully we can all finish in time. See you next time!

Workshop Extension

Workshop Extension
At the end of each term a certain amount of people are chosen for a two day workshop extension group. I talked to Becca, Jesse and Kate about the extension and what they thought about it.
“It was a good experience and the project we had to do was to create a clock. I liked making them but it was hard work, it was really awesome seeing other people’s ideas and finished projects” Becca said.
“It was a really good learning experience as well, I was pleased with my finished project it was a pacific flower design. It was really fun and I recommend working hard to get chosen for this extension” Jesse said.
“It was really fun. It was challenging but the hard work pays off” Kate added.

Here is a picture of Kate with her awesome clock:

Term 3

In woodwork we are starting to make buzzers as our first project in term 3! We have chosen designs to put on top of our buzzers, mine is a book. The buzzers are like a game you have to match up the dots to make the buzzer buzz! We have only just started as it was our first day in the woodwork room for spec. We are quite excited to see our finished products and are looking forward to having a fun term in woodwork. Farewell for now!
